Murchison business still booming from increased traffic on post-quake route

Business owners are run off their feet in Murchison and in dire need of more staff as more travellers make their way through the town.

Since the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Kaikoura on November 14 and the closure of State Highway 1, traffic has been diverted onto to SH63, 6, 65 and 7 through many small towns, including Murchison.

Off Murchison’s main street sits Rivers Cafe.

Owner Jude Alfeld said there was no lull before Christmas this year.

“I just kept buying the stuff and keep going, the thing is you don’t have time to say; ‘This is doing more than ever’. It’s just everything, every single thing is selling.”
