Lee Suckling: Digital communication – what to use, and when

There’s a scene in that film He’s Just Not That Into You where Drew Barrymore’s character has a meltdown over which technological medium to use to contact someone she went on a date with.

It goes a little something like this: “I had this guy leave me a voicemail at work, so I called him at home. And then he emailed me to my Blackberry, so I texted to his cell, and then he emailed me to my home account … and the whole thing just got out of control.”

We’ve come a long way since this film came out in 2009, but digital communication remains just as confusing. Between Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, Twitter/Instagram direct messages, WhatsApp, iMessage, Tinder, email, and regular old text messaging, there are so many services out there – how are we supposed to know what to use, and when?
