Drone sports, perfected in midnight meetups in empty garages and warehouses, is hitting the mainstream, garnering prizes and prestige at places including ESPN.
Even as commercial use of drones remains controversial, the popularity of drone racing and combat among hobbyists is surging. It’s Nascar and “Fight Club” for geeks.

“To be a successful athlete, you need to have fast hand-eye coordination, fast reflexes and the freedom to crash,” said Marque Cornblatt of the Aerial Sports League.
“It changes your brain chemistry,” he said. “Once you do it, you crave it.”
These are not your typical consumer drones like the DJI Phantom, which are big, easy and available to anyone with a credit card.
They’re elite, custom-built machines, reflecting skilled electronics, circuit design, aeronautics and mechanical engineering.
