After Gamergate, female video game developers on the rise

The male-dominated video game industry is changing as more women develop games, play games and take jobs reviewing games.

While the ongoing cyber harassment of female gamers known as “Gamergate” indicates a reluctance by some to accept the growing number of women in the industry, mainstream institutions are welcoming all to the console.

The animation and gaming arts programme at Philadelphia’s Moore College of Art & Design will see its first class of game developers graduate next year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology created its Game Lab in 2012. New York University’s Tisch School began offering a video game design degree last year.

Shark alert! High- and low-tech ways to protect beach-goers

From drones and smartphone apps to old-school flags and signs, a growing shark population has officials and researchers turning to responses both high- and low-tech to ensure safety for millions of beachgoers this summer.

New warning flags and signs are cropping up at some US beaches and a local shark research nonprofit is developing a shark tracking app for the entire Eastern Seaboard.

Researchers at Duke University and the University of North Carolina, meanwhile, are testing shark-seeking drones in a scientific study that may one day give beach lifeguards a new eye in the sky.

“The days of burying our heads in the sand and saying, `What sharks? We don’t have sharks here’ are over,” said Gregory Skomal, a biologist who has been studying the white shark population.

“It’s time to move past that and be forthright and honest with the public about the presence of these animals.”

The new measures are the latest acknowledgements of the new reality taking hold on.

A dog’s life: Tula the rescue dog is a better photographer than you

Tula is a pretty talented photographer. Her Instagram account is better than yours, probably. It’s definitely better than mine. This all seems fairly impressive to me, because Tula is a dog.

Are always-on home speakers creepy?

We know that tech companies have been watching our every move for years – but are you ready to have your home conversations monitored as well?

Following on the footsteps of Amazon’s smash Echo connected speaker, which reads the weather and news, plays music, and turns lights on and off, based on your voice instructions, Google is set to launch its rival product, Google Home, later this year.

And recent reports surfaced saying Apple could be joining the fray with its own speaker featuring the Siri personal digital assistant from the iPhone.

Gawker lawsuit evolves into battle of tech billionaires

Billionaire media owner Pierre Omidyar is backing news and entertainment website Gawker Media in its lawsuit against wrestler Hulk Hogan, adding a new twist to a case pitting technology money against press freedom.

Omidyar, owner of The Intercept publisher First Look Media, is asking other media outlets to file legal briefs in support of Gawker, First Look said in a statement.

Gawker is battling an invasion-of-privacy lawsuit brought by Hogan, who won a US$140 million judgment against it – enough to cripple the company, which this week said it was exploring financial options.

In 2012, Gawker had published a sex tape of Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea.

Overwatch: Multiplayer masterpiece puts the fun back into online shooters

REVIEW: The ability to play against other gamers from around the world is the single defining characteristic that separates modern videogames from their relatively simplistic 8 and 16-bit history.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, if you wanted to test your skills against someone else, they’d need to be sitting on the sofa next to you – or if you were feeling really brave you could make a visit to your local arcade and put your money where your mouth was. If you were lucky enough to have access to a prehistoric dial-up modem and a decent PC, you could maybe set up a patchy Doom deathmatch, but this was almost unheard of. For most gamers of that era, multiplayer was strictly restricted to people in the same room.

That all changed with the advent of broadband internet in the early 2000s. PC gamers took advantage of these smooth, lag-free connections and the first batch of net-connected consoles brought online gaming to the masses.

Sega’s ill-fated Dreamcast tested the waters but it was the original Xbox, and specifically Halo 2 that really opened the floodgates. Suddenly, all you needed was a relatively cheap console and a net connection and you were instantly competing against players from Australia, the US and Europe – and talking to them via chat channels at the same time.

This was amazing and appalling in equal measure. It was awesome being able to compete against strangers from far-flung corners of the globe but as is so often the case, there was always a minority of idiots trying to spoil the experience.

If it wasn’t angry teens screaming abuse, it would be griefers actively going out of their way to try and ruin the game for everyone else. Then there was the so-called “hardcore” crowd instantly turning their noses up at anyone they could dismiss as a “noob” (ie, anyone even slightly less experienced than them).
